American Legion Scholarships

The American Legion offers a variety of college and vocational or trade school scholarships that support academic achievement, leadership, and military-connected families. These programs help eligible students nationwide to pursue higher education and achieve their goals.

SAMSUNG SCHOLARSHIP

Worldwide electronics leader Samsung endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million to be administered by The American Legion in 1996. Meant to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea’s aid during its struggle against communist forces in the Korean War, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program established a series of scholarships derived from interest and other income from the principal amount. 

LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP

The American Legion Legacy Scholarship is a needs-based scholarship designed to fulfill a financial gap remaining after all federal and state educational grants/scholarships available to an eligible applicant have been utilized. The 2026-27 tuition is capped at $29,920.95 which is the maximum amount the VA will pay out per academic year.

NATIONAL ORATORICAL CONTEST SCHOLARSHIP

Since 1938, The American Legion’s National Oratorical Contest has helped youth deepen their understanding of the Constitution, develop leadership, and earn scholarships through public speaking.

BASEBALL SCHOLARSHIP

Department Baseball Scholarship Winners receive $500. Each certified Department Baseball scholarship winner shall be considered for The American Legion All-Academic Team sponsored by Diamond Sports, annually. Eight players selected by a scholarship selection committee at The American Legion World Series will receive an additional $2,500 scholarship. A ninth player, selected as the most outstanding member of the All-Academic Team, will be awarded an additional $5,000 scholarship. 

EAGLE SCOUT OF THE YEAR

he American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year nomination window is from November 1st to March 1st, annually. Nomination packets must be received by each applicant’s respective American Legion Department (state) no later than March 1st. Then each respective American Legion Department (state) Selection Committee will determine the Eagle Scout judged to be the best in their Department (state). The Department (state) will then send that packet, along with a list of the members serving on that Selection Committee, to The American Legion National Headquarters no later than April 1st.
The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year will receive a $10,000 scholarship. Three (3) runner-up scholarship awards will be granted in the amount of $2,500 each.

JUNIOR SHOOTING SPORTS

Two Categories:
Precision: Winner will receive $5,000 in college scholarships
Sporter: Winner will receive $5,000 in college scholarships
These scholarships are provided in part by The American Legion and The Sons of the American Legion.
Second place finishers in each category will each receive $1,000 in college scholarships generously provided by The American Legion Auxiliary.
Junior Shooting Sports scholarship recipients will be eligible to receive their scholarships upon enrollment to an accredited trade school, college, or university in the United States. All scholarship claims are a two-party check: to the student AND the school.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE THROUGH ANAVICUS

ANAVICUS (Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada United States) is a unit of ANAVETS – the Canadian veterans organization founded in 1840. The United States charter was presented in 1953 during The American Legion’s national convention in St. Louis where the first ANAVICUS meeting was held. There are 1,200 members in ANAVICUS, and all are American Legion past national commanders and other distinguished Legionnaires. ANAVICUS membership is by invitation only, and new members are inducted twice a year at national convention and the Washington Conference.
